History

To accommodate the steadily growing Catholic population in Harrisburg.  Bishop Leech established Holy Name of Jesus Parish in 1960.  Located in Lower Paxton Township, the new parish welcomed the first resident pastor, Father George Rost, who over the next eight years built a church building, social hall, and convent and purchased land for a rectory.

Eight Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill arrived in 1961 to open the doors of the parish school.  From 1968 until 2002 HNJ continued church expansion with a gymnasium, an education center, and rectory.  Monsignor Robert Lawrence became pastor in 2002 and furthered the priestly ministry within the church, celebrating Sacraments, visiting the sick and dying, and distinguishing himself as a gifted administrator.

To generate funds for the church, parishioners host an annual summer festival, and every Christmas the congregation holds "The Giveaway," collecting gifts and food to aid needy families within the community.
